Power BI

Tato can find your Power BI reports and semantic models, read their structure, and run queries against them to answer questions with your real numbers. The connection is read-only: Tato can't change your reports or models.

Setup: A Microsoft Entra admin registers Tato once in your Microsoft tenant. Then a Tato admin adds Power BI as a connector. Each person then connects their own Microsoft account from Tato chat.

Tato connects through Microsoft's Fabric IQ MCP server. It works with Power BI reports and semantic models, not dashboards, paginated reports, or Power BI apps. It isn't available in sovereign clouds or regions that only support Power BI.

Connect Power BI

Microsoft doesn't let apps register themselves automatically, so an admin has to register Tato in Microsoft Entra first.

Copy Tato's OAuth callback URL

  1. Open MCP connectors in your organization settings. Press Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows) and search for MCP connectors.
  2. Copy the OAuth callback URL.

Register Tato in Microsoft Entra

You need to be able to register apps in your Microsoft tenant for these steps.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Entra admin center and open App registrations, then press New registration.
  2. Enter a name, like "Tato".
  3. Under Supported account types, choose Accounts in this organizational directory only (Single tenant), then press Register.
  4. Copy the Application (client) ID and the Directory (tenant) ID from the overview page.
  5. Open Authentication, press Add a platform, and choose Mobile and desktop applications. Paste Tato's OAuth callback URL, then press Configure and Save. Leave Allow public client flows set to No.
  6. Open API permissions, press Add a permission, and choose Power BI Service → Delegated permissions. Add Item.Read.All, Item.Execute.All, and Dataset.Read.All, then press Add permissions.
  7. If your tenant requires it, press Grant admin consent.

Add Power BI in Tato

Open MCP connectors in Tato and follow Connect your apps to Tato. Use this MCP server URL:

When Tato asks, enter the application (client) ID and directory (tenant) ID you copied from Microsoft Entra.

  • Ask Tato for the latest budget or utilization numbers for a project and add them to a status report.
  • Check a figure someone quoted in a meeting against the Power BI report it came from.

Each query covers one semantic model and returns up to 250 rows by default.
